<p class='english'>The Lamanite prisoners are used to fortify the city Bountiful—Dissensions among the Nephites give rise to Lamanite victories—Helaman takes command of the two thousand stripling sons of the people of Ammon. About 64–63 B.C.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>1</span> 事情是這樣的，他們派衛兵看守拉曼戰俘，並命他們埋葬他們的死者，是的，以及陣亡的尼腓人；他們工作時，摩羅乃派人看守他們。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>1</span> And it came to pass that they did set guards over the prisoners of the Lamanites, and did compel them to go forth and bury their dead, yea, and also the dead of the Nephites who were slain; and Moroni placed men over them to guard them while they should perform their labors.</p>

<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>2</span> And Moroni went to the city of Mulek with Lehi, and took command of the city and gave it unto Lehi. Now behold, this Lehi was a man who had been with Moroni in the more part of all his battles; and he was a man <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng like] unto Moroni, and they rejoiced in each other’s safety; yea, they were beloved by each other, and also beloved by all the people of Nephi.</p>

<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>4</span> And he caused that they should build a <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng breastwork] of timbers upon the inner bank of the ditch; and they cast up dirt out of the ditch against the breastwork of timbers; and thus they did cause the Lamanites to labor until they had encircled the city of Bountiful round about with a strong wall of timbers and earth, to an exceeding height.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>5</span> 此後，這城市變成一座非常堅固的堡壘；他們在城內看守拉曼戰俘，是的，就在他們親手修築的圍牆內。摩羅乃不得不派拉曼人工作，因為他們工作的時候較易於看守；他希望他攻打拉曼人時能有所有的軍力。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>5</span> And this city became an exceeding stronghold ever after; and in this city they did guard the prisoners of the Lamanites; yea, even within a wall which they had caused them to <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng build] with their own hands. Now Moroni was compelled to cause the Lamanites to labor, because it was easy to guard them while at their labor; and he desired all his forces when he should make an attack upon the Lamanites.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>6</span> 事情是這樣的，摩羅乃就這樣戰勝了拉曼人極強大的一支軍隊，佔領了拉曼人在尼腓地極堅固的堡壘繆萊克城；他也這樣建造了一座堅固的堡壘來監禁戰俘。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>6</span> And it came to pass that Moroni had thus gained a victory over one of the greatest of the armies of the Lamanites, and had obtained possession of the city of <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng Mulek], which was one of the strongest holds of the Lamanites in the land of Nephi; and thus he had also built a stronghold to retain his prisoners.</p>

<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>7</span> And it came to pass that he did no more attempt a battle with the Lamanites in that year, but he did employ his men in preparing for war, yea, and in making fortifications to guard against the Lamanites, yea, and also delivering their women and their children from famine and affliction, and providing food for their armies.</p>

<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>8</span> And now it came to pass that the armies of the Lamanites, on the west sea, south, while in the absence of Moroni on account of some intrigue amongst the Nephites, which caused <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng dissensions]amongst them, had gained some ground over the Nephites, yea, insomuch that they had obtained possession of a number of their cities in that part of the land.</p>

<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>10</span> And now behold, I have somewhat to say concerning the<sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng people] of Ammon, who, in the beginning, were Lamanites; but by Ammon and his brethren, or rather by the power and word of God, they had been <sup class='englishSup'>b</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng converted] unto the Lord; and they had been brought down into the land of Zarahemla, and had ever since been protected by the Nephites.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>11</span> 他們曾立約，所以不再拿起武器攻擊他們的弟兄；他們立約<sup class='chineseSup'>ａ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/11a 絕不]再流任何人的血；要是根據他們所立的誓約，他們早已滅亡了；是的，若不是艾蒙和他的弟兄對他們的憐憫與厚愛，他們早已落入自己弟兄的手中。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>11</span> And because of their oath they had been kept from taking up arms against their brethren; for they had taken an oath that they<sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng never] would shed blood more; and according to their oath they would have perished; yea, they would have suffered themselves to have fallen into the hands of their brethren, had it not been for the pity and the exceeding love which Ammon and his brethren had had for them.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>12</span> 他們因為這緣故被帶下柴雷罕拉地，並一直<sup class='chineseSup'>ａ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/12a 受]尼腓人保護。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>12</span> And for this cause they were brought down into the land of Zarahemla; and they ever had been <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng protected] by the Nephites.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>13</span> 但是事情是這樣的，他們看到尼腓人為他們冒險犯難，承受許多痛苦與折磨時，於心不忍，<sup class='chineseSup'>ａ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/13a 想]拿起武器捍衛他們的國家。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>13</span> But it came to pass that when they saw the danger, and the many <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng afflictions] and tribulations which the Nephites bore for them, they were moved with compassion and were <sup class='englishSup'>b</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng desirous] to take up arms in the defence of their country.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>14</span> 但是看啊，他們正要拿起作戰武器時，為希拉曼和他的弟兄所勸阻，因為他們正要<sup class='chineseSup'>ａ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/14a 破壞]他們所立的<sup class='chineseSup'>ｂ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/14b 約]。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>14</span> But behold, as they were about to take their weapons of war, they were overpowered by the persuasions of Helaman and his brethren, for they were about to <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng break] the <sup class='englishSup'>b</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng oath] which they had made.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>15</span> 希拉曼恐怕他們這樣做會喪失他們的靈魂；因此，凡立約的人，這時只能看著他們的弟兄在危險的情況中，忍受各種痛苦。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>15</span> And Helaman feared lest by so doing they should lose their souls; therefore all those who had entered into this covenant were compelled to behold their brethren wade through their afflictions, in their dangerous circumstances at this time.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>16</span> 但是看啊，事情是這樣的，他們有很多兒子並沒有立約不拿起作戰武器抗敵自衛，因此，這時他們儘量集合了所有能拿武器的人，並自稱尼腓人。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>16</span> But behold, it came to pass they had many <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng sons], who had not entered into a covenant that they would not take their weapons of war to defend themselves against their enemies; therefore they did assemble themselves together at this time, as many as were able to take up arms, and they called themselves Nephites.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>17</span> 他們立約要為尼腓人的自由而戰，是的，誓死保衛家園；是的，他們也立約絕不放棄他們的<sup class='chineseSup'>ａ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/17a 自由]，無論如何都要為保護尼腓人和他們自己免受奴役而戰。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>17</span> And they entered into a covenant to fight for the liberty of the Nephites, yea, to protect the land unto the <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng laying] down of their lives; yea, even they covenanted that they never would give up their <sup class='englishSup'>b</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng liberty], but they would fight in all cases to protect the Nephites and themselves from bondage.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>18</span> 現在看啊，有兩千名青年立此誓約，拿起作戰武器，捍衛他們的國家。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>18</span> Now behold, there were two thousand of those young men, who entered into this covenant and took their weapons of war to defend their country.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>19</span> 現在看啊，他們向來都不是尼腓人的負擔，此時此刻，他們對尼腓人是一大支持；他們拿起作戰武器，並希望希拉曼作他們的領袖。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>19</span> And now behold, as they never had hitherto been a disadvantage to the Nephites, they became now at this period of time also a great support; for they took their weapons of war, and they would that Helaman should be their leader.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>20</span> 他們都是年輕人，非常<sup class='chineseSup'>ａ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/20a 勇敢]、強健和勤勉；但是看啊，不僅如此，任何時候，託付他們任何事情，他們都<sup class='chineseSup'>ｂ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/20b 值得]信賴。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>20</span> And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng courage], and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>21</span> 是的，他們是真誠而認真的人，因為他們曾受教導要遵守神的誡命，並正直地<sup class='chineseSup'>ａ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/21a 行走]在祂面前。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>21</span> Yea, they were men of truth and <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng soberness], for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to <sup class='englishSup'>b</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng walk] uprightly before him.</p>
<p class='chinese'><span class='chineseVerse'>22</span> 事情是這樣的，希拉曼率領他的<sup class='chineseSup'>ａ</sup>[http://scriptures.lds.org/zh/alma/53/22a 兩千]名青年戰士，支援南部靠西海邊境上的尼腓人。</p>
<p class='english'><span class='englishVerse'>22</span> And now it came to pass that Helaman did march at the head of his <sup class='englishSup'>a</sup>[http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/53?lang=eng two] thousand stripling soldiers, to the support of the people in the borders of the land on the south by the west sea.</p>
